Behind the Scenes Kingsmen

Behind the Scenes Kingsmen

As everyone knows, behind every good band there is a wonderful support staff that makes them a GREAT band. The Kingsmen are no exception. We have what we feel is the most awesome support team in the business. These people who all work behind the scenes, are rarely seen by the public but have jobs that are equally as important as the 5 guys on stage who play the music.

Without these people, The Kingsmen would be lost. We thought it was important to recognize all that they do for us and to say THANK YOU as best we could.

We have known Craig since he was in high school. He has always shown an interest in electronics and computer technology. Craig is truly the first sound engineer The Kingsmen have had the luxury of working with. He is more than creative with our sound; Craig is a valued friend to each of us. The most amazing thing about Craig besides his talent and expertise, is how he can go on the road for weeks at a time with only a shaving kit sized suitcase.

Craig is the reason we sound so great. While performing, each of The Kingsmen play individual musical roles and parts that make up the sound you hear. Craig mixes each part of the music to create a final sound for the audience. If you hear too much guitar or the drums are too soft, it’s Craig’s fault! However, in over 14 years of service, The Kingsmen have only been complimented on his work. He is extremely important to the band. It is vital that the band performing on stage trust in the engineer mixing the sound. Craig has our complete trust. Craig also makes the guitar pre amps and bass pre amp we use to get that true garage rock sound. We would be lost without Craig.

If you are at a Kingsmen concert and you want it louder, just walk up to the mixing station and tell him to turn it up. However, if you think it’s too loud….leave!

Millie Bessey, Our Fan Club director

How do we explain Millie’s relationship with the Kingsmen? Hmmm…I guess Mike Mitchell said it best; “The Kingsmen are like five wayward boy scouts that constantly need to be tended to and Millie is like the eccentric den mother who keeps us all in line.” Yep, that pretty well sums it up.

In the nearly 13 years Millie has been part of our lives she’s done a little of everything for us starting with organizing the first fan club we had in over 25 years. She assembled a team of individuals who took care of membership (Deb Jarzynka…We love you Deb!), working on the newsletter Clay Stabler, Pat Fowler, Lynn Trochelman, Nick DeBennedetto, Noel Lucht (and Deb too!) as well as selling our merchandise. This was no easy task as when it was at its peak our fan club boasted a membership of over 150 members. In addition, with the expertise of Web Designers, Brian McDonald, Jan Rizzo, Todd Bogert and Phil Morales, she helped assemble our Web Site that made it possible for us to connect with all or our fans, building long term relationships with them in a way we never could in the past.

She booked some of our coolest gigs and special events including, The Portage Summer Music Festival, The PBS “Red, White and Rock” special, playing “Louie Louie” with the Rice University Marching Owl Band, Fan Appreciation Weekend with the Seattle Mariners, The Phoenix Arizona Veteran’s Picnic, Peoria Economic Development’s annual baseball event and one of our favorites, singing the National Anthem at Wrigley Field. There are many more but these really stand out in our memory books.
With the recent marriage of their son Dan, to the lovely Melissa, Millie and her husband Richard decided to say good bye to Phoenix and relocate to the mountains in New Mexico. “It just seemed like the perfect time. For years I had wanted to focus my attention on building my company, ‘Concerts for America’ but never could devout the time to it when I was working. Being here will give me an opportunity to do that”, she said. “Not to worry though, The Kingsmen are still my number one priority. Our community does a lot of music events throughout the year so I’m already laying the groundwork for a concert series featuring a variety of 60’s artist. No doubt the Kingsmen will kick that concept off!

Deborah Jarzynka, our designer

Deborah became a Kingsmen fan back in 1995 when she and Millie attended one of our shows. So when the idea came up to do our fan club, it didn’t take much convincing for Deborah to jump on board. It has been said that she and Millie share one brain and the more we know about them, we think this is true. Deborah is the designing force in our fan club. She does the lay out and editing for every issue of Band Jive as well as the business cards, print ads, membership cards and backstage passes. Deborah will sit at the computer for hours until she gets it just right. Patience that none of the rest of us possess.

Deborah has been a great supporter of our band, whether it be in recruiting new members, or wearing her "Louie Louie" shirt. Whatever it takes to get the job done. We are truly lucky to have her working behind the scenes and appreciate all that she has done for the success of this fan club.
